This excursion takes in some magnificent gardens where you will see rare species' of plants which are only found on the island, spices such as vanilla, nutmeg, and cloves, as well as medicinal and ornamental plants. You will be able to taste a variety of tropical fruits including some that are unique to the island. This is followed by a visit to the Persian Baths of Kadichi, built in 1850 by the first sultan for his wife, Sheherezade.
This natural forest is located in a protected reserve. As well as the unique Kirk's colobus monkey, there are also Sykes monkeys, bushbabies, duikers, hyraxes, possibly the rare Zanzibar leopard, over 50 species of butterfly and 40 species of birds. There is a visitor’s centre on the main road South.
Once a jail, Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is a 30 minute boat ride from the west coast of Zanzibar. The island was once used for the detention of disobedient slaves, and a prison was built in 1893 but was never used. This is an ideal place to relax, swim and dive. You may also catch sight of the giant tortoises that inhabit the island, some of which are over 100 years old.
Visit the small fishing village of Kizimkazi to the south of the island and take a boat ride in a traditional dhow. After around 15 minutes, you will be able to catch sight of the dolphins that have made the reef their home. If you keep your distance, you will even be able to swim with them for a while!
The old stone town's architecture with its Arabic, African, European and Indian Characteristics will impress you as you wonder around the narrow streets and alleys of this fascinating historic place. Its an ideal place for shopping, visiting prominent buildings and interesting museums.
At the Northern Most tip of Zanzibar, Nungwi is a bustling tourist destination which has a spectacular sunset. In combination with a visit to the dhow building center and the Mnarani Aquarium, home to the leaf-back turtles, a trio to Nungwi has all the ingredients of a nice day out.
Scuba diving around Mnemba Island is spectacular. Mnemba is a circular reef, with aquarium conditions and it's the finest in Zanzibar. Offshore waters are rich in large game fish like marlin, barracuda and shark. Turtles, dolphins, whale sharks and pilot whales are regularly seen here. It is on the whale migration route at the end of August/September and whale sharks can be seen from December to April.
